Wind Turbine Blows Into Flames In Scotland

Dec 12, 2011 No Comments by

While wind turbines will be all green, renewable source of energy but one recent incident suggests they aren’t totally safe. The incident happened at Androssan, North Ayrshire, Scotland, an area that faced winds up to 160 miles per hour.

The operators of this wind farm, Ifinis from Edinburgh, UK said that the cause of explosion isn’t known yet and are investigating so as why the turbine caught fire.

One possible flaw might be with the gearbox whose job is to shut down the turbine when the wind reaches a speed of 55 mph to prevent any damage. The mechanism might have failed causing the turbine to continue running beyond its safety threshold.

According to Ifinis, no one was at the site when the incident occured.
